Cheerio Penny Error

I’m curious of the potential value of a 2000 Cheerio penny still in the original packaging however, the 2000 was clearly struck twice and the 000 can be seen above the original strike. Also appears to be a possible die crack on Lincoln

Thanks for posting Brian its's 3:40 am here, but well try and do some research on this coin. We made a video on the Cherio Penny a few months ago, but had not researched possible errors. I've updated your photos with a modified version of the original. With arrows pointing to the areas that look interesting.

Cheerios cents are simply one of the many cents that were minted by the United States Mint in the year 2000 that were included as a promotional item inside Cheerios serial boxes. That being said, there is no reason why there couldn't be double die. The one you present in question however looks like something more than just a double die obverse error. It appears that it has some doubling around the 2000 date as you mentioned but it also looks as though it has been rotated and either re-struck or struck against another 2000 cent. I wish I could look at the coin in hand to decide further. Also the coloring appears off is it the color of a dime or a penny? There are lots of instances where a 2000 cent was restruck on a 2000 dime. Without looking at it further I would suggest contacting PCGS and if you can afford it have them review the coin. I would 1000% not take it out of the original Cheerio packaging however. Hope this was helpful, interested to know what you find out. Please report back and let us know! If it is overstruck or a double denomination you will likely see Roosevelts head somewhere which I don't see. But if it was they are selling for between $150 and $1000 depending on the condition. The issue is while I see many errors graded by PCGS and NGC, I don't see any that have also been designated Cheerio Errors. This may be because they exist and they don't by choice provide that designation? Does this make sense? Whatever the case may be the coin is probably worth getting certified to be certain.

That is really appreciated and greatly appreciate the insight. I would LOVE to see what the other side looks like but as you mentioned, I have no intention from removing it from the original package. I will look into certification though. Thanks
