I feel like a numismatist is someone who considers the collecting of coins to be more than just a hobby. A general coin collector is a collector, while a numismatist is someone whos more dedicated to the more important details of collecting. A coin collector will get coin folders and fill out each missing date for say a penny. While a numismatist will focus on understanding grading, errors, color, rarity, mintage, and certification. Does that make sense? A numismatist might be willing to pay $10's of $100's of dollars for a coin, while a coin collector is likely only to pay face value for a coin? That being said the fact that you even know what a numismatist is...might in fact make you one :) Thanks for posting! Hope this helps!
