Where can I find collectible coins? How can I get started?

I'm a mother looking to get kids into coin collecting. I've always been sort of fascinated by coins and collecting. However the problem Is i have no idea where to start! I don't have a big budget, but I’d love to learn how to find coins that are valuable. Here are a few questions I have:

Where are the best places to find collectible coins? Are there specific stores, websites, or even local spots I should check out?
How do I know if a coin is worth collecting? Are there certain things I should look for?
What’s the best way to get started as a beginner without getting overwhelmed or ripped off?
Found of few of these silver dollars from 1971 and 1974 at an antique shop, and an Indian Penny that's over 100 years old.

Usually the best place to start if you dont want to spend a ton of $$$ are banks. Whenever you cash a check ask you teller if they have any off coins. Tell them what you just told us. I'm looking to start a collection with my kids. They will usually have something even if its just the new $1 "gold" coins. You could take it a step further and ask to leave your number with someone, ask that they call you when anything odd comes in. It's worth a shot, all they can say i No right? The indian head cent is probably worth just a few dollars due to its condition, however thats more than face value. :) Condition and color are everything for older pennies. In 1907 all cents were issued at the Philadelphia mint.
