1968 S Lincoln Penny

As you may know, this date Lincoln penny is wide am on America word,I think that I found an extra wide ame on America word, considering the distance between a and m on 1998,1999 and 2000 Lincoln pennies,I have compared my "find"with too many 1968 s,d,and p's pennies, and the separation between a and m,and m and e,is very noticeable,I hope I hit something good 😊,I expect your opinion soon, thanks,I'm attaching some pics, btw,I also noticed that the letters a,m,and e,are thinner than the normal pannies, that are a little bit thicker, the third pic is the normal ame,the first is the one I found.

There are so many variations and errors, I wanted to do a little research before I just replied.

I added a comparison image. I put your 1968 S Lincoln Penny reverse, next to a Regular Strike 1968 S Lincoln Penny so we can visually compare the two. The wide am was from all the resources I can see regular or default strike, the standard issue coin.

The close AM versions happened due to die swap errors at the mint, and depending on who you speak with they may say this is just a variety of the coin.

All that being said, it looks like what you have is a later issue strike, one where the die has been worn down and the sharpness of the coin therefore deteriorated by default.

As always though we suggest taking it to a someone in person for a final assessment. We were unable to find any official Wider AM specimens to confirm your assumption, but for we are not the final say so when it comes to the matter. We just provide assistance for coin enthusiast.

Hope this helps.

I just reread your post I'm sorry, the last image was the original coin, and you are correct the one you are questioning does look thinner, I am however betting that it is a regular issue but was struck by a die that was well worn. Here is animated gif with the 2 images overlayed for comparison.

It looks to me that the die was worn down, but that is just my general opinion. Anyone else care to weigh in?
